It was initially a box office bomb, and the movie studio wanted to pull it from theaters (because movie studios tend to be spineless, risk-averse creatures). Garner had confidence in it though, and challenged the studio to match a \$10,000 stake to keep it in the theaters. The studio accepted his challenge, word of mouth caught on, and the film became a minor classic. Kudos to Garner for putting his money where his mouth was. It's not the best film in the world, but it's worth a watch.
