  11. DESCRIPTION
  12. man is the system's manual pager. Each page argument given to man is
  13. normally the name of a program, utility or function. The manual page
  14. associated with each of these arguments is then found and displayed. A
  15. section, if provided, will direct man to look only in that section of
  16. the manual. The default action is to search in all of the available
  17. sections following a pre-defined order (see DEFAULTS), and to show only
  18. the first page found, even if page exists in several sections.
  19. The table below shows the section numbers of the manual followed by the
  20. types of pages they contain.

  24. 4 Special files (usually found in /dev)
  25. 5 File formats and conventions, e.g. /etc/passwd

  31. A manual page consists of several sections.
  32. Conventional section names include NAME, SYNOPSIS, CONFIGURATION, DE‐
  33. SCRIPTION, OPTIONS, EXIT STATUS, RETURN VALUE, ERRORS, ENVIRONMENT,
  34. FILES, VERSIONS, CONFORMING TO, NOTES, BUGS, EXAMPLE, AUTHORS, and
  35. SEE ALSO.
  36. The following conventions apply to the SYNOPSIS section and can be used
  37. as a guide in other sections.
  38. bold text type exactly as shown.
  39. italic text replace with appropriate argument.
  40. [-abc] any or all arguments within [ ] are optional.
  41. -a|-b options delimited by | cannot be used together.
  42. argument ... argument is repeatable.
  43. [expression] ... entire expression within [ ] is repeatable.
  44. Exact rendering may vary depending on the output device. For instance,
  45. man will usually not be able to render italics when running in a termi‐
  46. nal, and will typically use underlined or coloured text instead.
  47. The command or function illustration is a pattern that should match all
  48. possible invocations. In some cases it is advisable to illustrate sev‐
  49. eral exclusive invocations as is shown in the SYNOPSIS section of this
  50. manual page.
  51. EXAMPLES
  52. man ls
  53. Display the manual page for the item (program) ls.
  54. man man.7
  55. Display the manual page for macro package man from section 7.
  56. (This is an alternative spelling of "man 7 man".)
  57. man 'man(7)'
  58. Display the manual page for macro package man from section 7.
  59. (This is another alternative spelling of "man 7 man". It may be
  60. more convenient when copying and pasting cross-references to manual
  61. pages. Note that the parentheses must normally be quoted to pro‐
  62. tect them from the shell.)
  63. man -a intro
  64. Display, in succession, all of the available intro manual pages
  65. contained within the manual. It is possible to quit between suc‐
  66. cessive displays or skip any of them.
  67. man -t bash | lpr -Pps
  68. Format the manual page for bash into the default troff or groff
  69. format and pipe it to the printer named ps. The default output for
  70. groff is usually PostScript. man --help should advise as to which
  71. processor is bound to the -t option.
  72. man -l -Tdvi ./foo.1x.gz > ./foo.1x.dvi
  73. This command will decompress and format the nroff source manual
  74. page ./foo.1x.gz into a device independent (dvi) file. The redi‐
  75. rection is necessary as the -T flag causes output to be directed to
  76. stdout with no pager. The output could be viewed with a program
  77. such as xdvi or further processed into PostScript using a program
  78. such as dvips.
  79. man -k printf
  80. Search the short descriptions and manual page names for the keyword
  81. printf as regular expression. Print out any matches. Equivalent
  82. to apropos printf.
  83. man -f smail
  84. Lookup the manual pages referenced by smail and print out the short
  85. descriptions of any found. Equivalent to whatis smail.
  86. OVERVIEW
  87. Many options are available to man in order to give as much flexibility
  88. as possible to the user. Changes can be made to the search path, sec‐
  89. tion order, output processor, and other behaviours and operations de‐
  90. tailed below.
  91. If set, various environment variables are interrogated to determine the
  92. operation of man. It is possible to set the "catch-all" variable
  93. $MANOPT to any string in command line format, with the exception that
  94. any spaces used as part of an option's argument must be escaped (pre‐
  95. ceded by a backslash). man will parse $MANOPT prior to parsing its own
  96. command line. Those options requiring an argument will be overridden
  97. by the same options found on the command line. To reset all of the op‐
  98. tions set in $MANOPT, -D can be specified as the initial command line
  99. option. This will allow man to "forget" about the options specified in
  100. $MANOPT, although they must still have been valid.
  101. Manual pages are normally stored in nroff(1) format under a directory
  102. such as /usr/share/man. In some installations, there may also be pre‐
  103. formatted cat pages to improve performance. See manpath(5) for details
  104. of where these files are stored.
  105. This package supports manual pages in multiple languages, controlled by
  106. your locale. If your system did not set this up for you automatically,
  107. then you may need to set $LC_MESSAGES, $LANG, or another system-depen‐
  108. dent environment variable to indicate your preferred locale, usually
  109. specified in the POSIX format:
  110. <language>[_<territory>[.<character-set>[,<version>]]]
  111. If the desired page is available in your locale, it will be displayed
  112. in lieu of the standard (usually American English) page.
  113. If you find that the translations supplied with this package are not
  114. available in your native language and you would like to supply them,
  115. please contact the maintainer who will be coordinating such activity.
  116. Individual manual pages are normally written and maintained by the
  117. maintainers of the program, function, or other topic that they docu‐
  118. ment, and are not included with this package. If you find that a man‐
  119. ual page is missing or inadequate, please report that to the maintain‐
  120. ers of the package in question.
  121. For information regarding other features and extensions available with
  122. this manual pager, please read the documents supplied with the package.
  123. DEFAULTS
  124. The order of sections to search may be overridden by the environment
  125. variable $MANSECT or by the SECTION directive in /etc/manpath.config.
  126. By default it is as follows:

  128. The formatted manual page is displayed using a pager. This can be
  129. specified in a number of ways, or else will fall back to a default (see
  130. option -P for details).
  131. The filters are deciphered by a number of means. Firstly, the command
  132. line option -p or the environment variable $MANROFFSEQ is interrogated.
  133. If -p was not used and the environment variable was not set, the ini‐
  134. tial line of the nroff file is parsed for a preprocessor string. To
  135. contain a valid preprocessor string, the first line must resemble
  136. '\" <string>
  137. where string can be any combination of letters described by option -p
  138. below.
  139. If none of the above methods provide any filter information, a default
  140. set is used.
  141. A formatting pipeline is formed from the filters and the primary for‐
  142. matter (nroff or [tg]roff with -t) and executed. Alternatively, if an
  143. executable program mandb_nfmt (or mandb_tfmt with -t) exists in the man
  144. tree root, it is executed instead. It gets passed the manual source
  145. file, the preprocessor string, and optionally the device specified with
  146. -T or -E as arguments.
  147. OPTIONS
  148. Non-argument options that are duplicated either on the command line, in
  149. $MANOPT, or both, are not harmful. For options that require an argu‐
  150. ment, each duplication will override the previous argument value.
  151. General options
  152. -C file, --config-file=file
  153. Use this user configuration file rather than the default of
  154. ~/.manpath.
  155. -d, --debug
  156. Print debugging information.
  157. -D, --default
  158. This option is normally issued as the very first option and re‐
  159. sets man's behaviour to its default. Its use is to reset those
  160. options that may have been set in $MANOPT. Any options that
  161. follow -D will have their usual effect.
  162. --warnings[=warnings]
  163. Enable warnings from groff. This may be used to perform sanity
  164. checks on the source text of manual pages. warnings is a comma-
  165. separated list of warning names; if it is not supplied, the de‐
  166. fault is "mac". See the “Warnings” node in info groff for a
  167. list of available warning names.
  168. Main modes of operation
  169. -f, --whatis
  170. Equivalent to whatis. Display a short description from the man‐
  171. ual page, if available. See whatis(1) for details.
  172. -k, --apropos
  173. Equivalent to apropos. Search the short manual page descrip‐
  174. tions for keywords and display any matches. See apropos(1) for
  175. details.
  176. -K, --global-apropos
  177. Search for text in all manual pages. This is a brute-force
  178. search, and is likely to take some time; if you can, you should
  179. specify a section to reduce the number of pages that need to be
  180. searched. Search terms may be simple strings (the default), or
  181. regular expressions if the --regex option is used.
  182. Note that this searches the sources of the manual pages, not the
  183. rendered text, and so may include false positives due to things
  184. like comments in source files. Searching the rendered text
  185. would be much slower.
  186. -l, --local-file
  187. Activate "local" mode. Format and display local manual files
  188. instead of searching through the system's manual collection.
  189. Each manual page argument will be interpreted as an nroff source
  190. file in the correct format. No cat file is produced. If '-' is
  191. listed as one of the arguments, input will be taken from stdin.
  192. When this option is not used, and man fails to find the page re‐
  193. quired, before displaying the error message, it attempts to act
  194. as if this option was supplied, using the name as a filename and
  195. looking for an exact match.
  196. -w, --where, --path, --location
  197. Don't actually display the manual page, but do print the loca‐
  198. tion of the source nroff file that would be formatted. If the
  199. -a option is also used, then print the locations of all source
  200. files that match the search criteria.
  201. -W, --where-cat, --location-cat
  202. Don't actually display the manual page, but do print the loca‐
  203. tion of the preformatted cat file that would be displayed. If
  204. the -a option is also used, then print the locations of all pre‐
  205. formatted cat files that match the search criteria.
  206. If -w and -W are both used, then print both source file and cat
  207. file separated by a space. If all of -w, -W, and -a are used,
  208. then do this for each possible match.
  209. -c, --catman
  210. This option is not for general use and should only be used by
  211. the catman program.
  212. -R encoding, --recode=encoding
  213. Instead of formatting the manual page in the usual way, output
  214. its source converted to the specified encoding. If you already
  215. know the encoding of the source file, you can also use man‐
  216. conv(1) directly. However, this option allows you to convert
  217. several manual pages to a single encoding without having to ex‐
  218. plicitly state the encoding of each, provided that they were al‐
  219. ready installed in a structure similar to a manual page hierar‐
  220. chy.
  221. Consider using man-recode(1) instead for converting multiple
  222. manual pages, since it has an interface designed for bulk con‐
  223. version and so can be much faster.
  224. Finding manual pages
  225. -L locale, --locale=locale
  226. man will normally determine your current locale by a call to the
  227. C function setlocale(3) which interrogates various environment
  228. variables, possibly including $LC_MESSAGES and $LANG. To tempo‐
  229. rarily override the determined value, use this option to supply
  230. a locale string directly to man. Note that it will not take ef‐
  231. fect until the search for pages actually begins. Output such as
  232. the help message will always be displayed in the initially de‐
  233. termined locale.
  234. -m system[,...], --systems=system[,...]
  235. If this system has access to other operating system's manual
  236. pages, they can be accessed using this option. To search for a
  237. manual page from NewOS's manual page collection, use the option
  238. -m NewOS.
  239. The system specified can be a combination of comma delimited op‐
  240. erating system names. To include a search of the native operat‐
  241. ing system's manual pages, include the system name man in the
  242. argument string. This option will override the $SYSTEM environ‐
  243. ment variable.
  244. -M path, --manpath=path
  245. Specify an alternate manpath to use. By default, man uses man‐
  246. path derived code to determine the path to search. This option
  247. overrides the $MANPATH environment variable and causes option -m
  248. to be ignored.
  249. A path specified as a manpath must be the root of a manual page
  250. hierarchy structured into sections as described in the man-db
  251. manual (under "The manual page system"). To view manual pages
  252. outside such hierarchies, see the -l option.
  253. -S list, -s list, --sections=list
  254. The given list is a colon- or comma-separated list of sections,
  255. used to determine which manual sections to search and in what
  256. order. This option overrides the $MANSECT environment variable.
  257. (The -s spelling is for compatibility with System V.)
  258. -e sub-extension, --extension=sub-extension
  259. Some systems incorporate large packages of manual pages, such as
  260. those that accompany the Tcl package, into the main manual page
  261. hierarchy. To get around the problem of having two manual pages
  262. with the same name such as exit(3), the Tcl pages were usually
  263. all assigned to section l. As this is unfortunate, it is now
  264. possible to put the pages in the correct section, and to assign
  265. a specific "extension" to them, in this case, exit(3tcl). Under
  266. normal operation, man will display exit(3) in preference to
  267. exit(3tcl). To negotiate this situation and to avoid having to
  268. know which section the page you require resides in, it is now
  269. possible to give man a sub-extension string indicating which
  270. package the page must belong to. Using the above example, sup‐
  271. plying the option -e tcl to man will restrict the search to
  272. pages having an extension of *tcl.
  273. -i, --ignore-case
  274. Ignore case when searching for manual pages. This is the de‐
  275. fault.
  276. -I, --match-case
  277. Search for manual pages case-sensitively.
  278. --regex
  279. Show all pages with any part of either their names or their de‐
  280. scriptions matching each page argument as a regular expression,
  281. as with apropos(1). Since there is usually no reasonable way to
  282. pick a "best" page when searching for a regular expression, this
  283. option implies -a.
  284. --wildcard
  285. Show all pages with any part of either their names or their de‐
  286. scriptions matching each page argument using shell-style wild‐
  287. cards, as with apropos(1) --wildcard. The page argument must
  288. match the entire name or description, or match on word bound‐
  289. aries in the description. Since there is usually no reasonable
  290. way to pick a "best" page when searching for a wildcard, this
  291. option implies -a.
  292. --names-only
  293. If the --regex or --wildcard option is used, match only page
  294. names, not page descriptions, as with whatis(1). Otherwise, no
  295. effect.
  296. -a, --all
  297. By default, man will exit after displaying the most suitable
  298. manual page it finds. Using this option forces man to display
  299. all the manual pages with names that match the search criteria.
  300. -u, --update
  301. This option causes man to update its database caches of in‐
  302. stalled manual pages. This is only needed in rare situations,
  303. and it is normally better to run mandb(8) instead.
  304. --no-subpages
  305. By default, man will try to interpret pairs of manual page names
  306. given on the command line as equivalent to a single manual page
  307. name containing a hyphen or an underscore. This supports the
  308. common pattern of programs that implement a number of subcom‐
  309. mands, allowing them to provide manual pages for each that can
  310. be accessed using similar syntax as would be used to invoke the
  311. subcommands themselves. For example:
  312. $ man -aw git diff
  313. /usr/share/man/man1/git-diff.1.gz
  314. To disable this behaviour, use the --no-subpages option.
  315. $ man -aw --no-subpages git diff
  316. /usr/share/man/man1/git.1.gz
  317. /usr/share/man/man3/Git.3pm.gz
  318. /usr/share/man/man1/diff.1.gz
  319. Controlling formatted output
  320. -P pager, --pager=pager
  321. Specify which output pager to use. By default, man uses pager,
  322. falling back to cat if pager is not found or is not executable.
  323. This option overrides the $MANPAGER environment variable, which
  324. in turn overrides the $PAGER environment variable. It is not
  325. used in conjunction with -f or -k.
  326. The value may be a simple command name or a command with argu‐
  327. ments, and may use shell quoting (backslashes, single quotes, or
  328. double quotes). It may not use pipes to connect multiple com‐
  329. mands; if you need that, use a wrapper script, which may take
  330. the file to display either as an argument or on standard input.
  331. -r prompt, --prompt=prompt
  332. If a recent version of less is used as the pager, man will at‐
  333. tempt to set its prompt and some sensible options. The default
  334. prompt looks like
  335. Manual page name(sec) line x
  336. where name denotes the manual page name, sec denotes the section
  337. it was found under and x the current line number. This is
  338. achieved by using the $LESS environment variable.
  339. Supplying -r with a string will override this default. The
  340. string may contain the text $MAN_PN which will be expanded to
  341. the name of the current manual page and its section name sur‐
  342. rounded by "(" and ")". The string used to produce the default
  343. could be expressed as

  346. (press h for help or q to quit)
  347. It is broken into three lines here for the sake of readability
  348. only. For its meaning see the less(1) manual page. The prompt
  349. string is first evaluated by the shell. All double quotes,
  350. back-quotes and backslashes in the prompt must be escaped by a
  351. preceding backslash. The prompt string may end in an escaped $
  352. which may be followed by further options for less. By default
  353. man sets the -ix8 options.
  354. The $MANLESS environment variable described below may be used to
  355. set a default prompt string if none is supplied on the command
  356. line.
  357. -7, --ascii
  358. When viewing a pure ascii(7) manual page on a 7 bit terminal or
  359. terminal emulator, some characters may not display correctly
  360. when using the latin1(7) device description with GNU nroff.
  361. This option allows pure ascii manual pages to be displayed in
  362. ascii with the latin1 device. It will not translate any latin1
  363. text. The following table shows the translations performed:
  364. some parts of it may only be displayed properly when using GNU
  365. nroff's latin1(7) device.

  375. If the latin1 column displays correctly, your terminal may be
  376. set up for latin1 characters and this option is not necessary.
  377. If the latin1 and ascii columns are identical, you are reading
  378. this page using this option or man did not format this page us‐
  379. ing the latin1 device description. If the latin1 column is
  380. missing or corrupt, you may need to view manual pages with this
  381. option.
  382. This option is ignored when using options -t, -H, -T, or -Z and
  383. may be useless for nroff other than GNU's.
  384. -E encoding, --encoding=encoding
  385. Generate output for a character encoding other than the default.
  386. For backward compatibility, encoding may be an nroff device such
  387. as ascii, latin1, or utf8 as well as a true character encoding
  388. such as UTF-8.
  389. --no-hyphenation, --nh
  390. Normally, nroff will automatically hyphenate text at line breaks
  391. even in words that do not contain hyphens, if it is necessary to
  392. do so to lay out words on a line without excessive spacing.
  393. This option disables automatic hyphenation, so words will only
  394. be hyphenated if they already contain hyphens.
  395. If you are writing a manual page and simply want to prevent
  396. nroff from hyphenating a word at an inappropriate point, do not
  397. use this option, but consult the nroff documentation instead;
  398. for instance, you can put "\%" inside a word to indicate that it
  399. may be hyphenated at that point, or put "\%" at the start of a
  400. word to prevent it from being hyphenated.
  401. --no-justification, --nj
  402. Normally, nroff will automatically justify text to both margins.
  403. This option disables full justification, leaving justified only
  404. to the left margin, sometimes called "ragged-right" text.
  405. If you are writing a manual page and simply want to prevent
  406. nroff from justifying certain paragraphs, do not use this op‐
  407. tion, but consult the nroff documentation instead; for instance,
  408. you can use the ".na", ".nf", ".fi", and ".ad" requests to tem‐
  409. porarily disable adjusting and filling.
  410. -p string, --preprocessor=string
  411. Specify the sequence of preprocessors to run before nroff or
  412. troff/groff. Not all installations will have a full set of pre‐
  413. processors. Some of the preprocessors and the letters used to
  414. designate them are: eqn (e), grap (g), pic (p), tbl (t), vgrind
  415. (v), refer (r). This option overrides the $MANROFFSEQ environ‐
  416. ment variable. zsoelim is always run as the very first pre‐
  417. processor.
  418. -t, --troff
  419. Use groff -mandoc to format the manual page to stdout. This op‐
  420. tion is not required in conjunction with -H, -T, or -Z.
  421. -T[device], --troff-device[=device]
  422. This option is used to change groff (or possibly troff's) output
  423. to be suitable for a device other than the default. It implies
  424. -t. Examples (provided with Groff-1.17) include dvi, latin1,
  425. ps, utf8, X75 and X100.
  426. -H[browser], --html[=browser]
  427. This option will cause groff to produce HTML output, and will
  428. display that output in a web browser. The choice of browser is
  429. determined by the optional browser argument if one is provided,
  430. by the $BROWSER environment variable, or by a compile-time de‐
  431. fault if that is unset (usually lynx). This option implies -t,
  432. and will only work with GNU troff.
  433. -X[dpi], --gxditview[=dpi]
  434. This option displays the output of groff in a graphical window
  435. using the gxditview program. The dpi (dots per inch) may be 75,
  436. 75-12, 100, or 100-12, defaulting to 75; the -12 variants use a
  437. 12-point base font. This option implies -T with the X75,
  438. X75-12, X100, or X100-12 device respectively.
  439. -Z, --ditroff
  440. groff will run troff and then use an appropriate post-processor
  441. to produce output suitable for the chosen device. If groff
  442. -mandoc is groff, this option is passed to groff and will sup‐
  443. press the use of a post-processor. It implies -t.
  444. Getting help
  445. -?, --help
  446. Print a help message and exit.
  447. --usage
  448. Print a short usage message and exit.
  449. -V, --version
  450. Display version information.
  451. EXIT STATUS
  452. 0 Successful program execution.
  453. 1 Usage, syntax or configuration file error.
  454. 2 Operational error.
  455. 3 A child process returned a non-zero exit status.
  456. 16 At least one of the pages/files/keywords didn't exist or wasn't
  457. matched.
  458. ENVIRONMENT
  459. MANPATH
  460. If $MANPATH is set, its value is used as the path to search for
  461. manual pages.
  462. MANROFFOPT
  463. Every time man invokes the formatter (nroff, troff, or groff),
  464. it adds the contents of $MANROFFOPT to the formatter's command
  465. line.
  466. MANROFFSEQ
  467. If $MANROFFSEQ is set, its value is used to determine the set of
  468. preprocessors to pass each manual page through. The default
  469. preprocessor list is system dependent.
  470. MANSECT
  471. If $MANSECT is set, its value is a colon-delimited list of sec‐
  472. tions and it is used to determine which manual sections to
  473. search and in what order. The default is "1 n l 8 3 2 3posix
  474. 3pm 3perl 3am 5 4 9 6 7", unless overridden by the SECTION di‐
  475. rective in /etc/manpath.config.
  476. MANPAGER, PAGER
  477. If $MANPAGER or $PAGER is set ($MANPAGER is used in preference),
  478. its value is used as the name of the program used to display the
  479. manual page. By default, pager is used, falling back to cat if
  480. pager is not found or is not executable.
  481. The value may be a simple command name or a command with argu‐
  482. ments, and may use shell quoting (backslashes, single quotes, or
  483. double quotes). It may not use pipes to connect multiple com‐
  484. mands; if you need that, use a wrapper script, which may take
  485. the file to display either as an argument or on standard input.
  486. MANLESS
  487. If $MANLESS is set, its value will be used as the default prompt
  488. string for the less pager, as if it had been passed using the -r
  489. option (so any occurrences of the text $MAN_PN will be expanded
  490. in the same way). For example, if you want to set the prompt
  491. string unconditionally to “my prompt string”, set $MANLESS to
  492. ‘-Psmy prompt string’. Using the -r option overrides this envi‐
  493. ronment variable.
  494. BROWSER
  495. If $BROWSER is set, its value is a colon-delimited list of com‐
  496. mands, each of which in turn is used to try to start a web
  497. browser for man --html. In each command, %s is replaced by a
  498. filename containing the HTML output from groff, %% is replaced
  499. by a single percent sign (%), and %c is replaced by a colon (:).
  500. SYSTEM If $SYSTEM is set, it will have the same effect as if it had
  501. been specified as the argument to the -m option.
  502. MANOPT If $MANOPT is set, it will be parsed prior to man's command line
  503. and is expected to be in a similar format. As all of the other
  504. man specific environment variables can be expressed as command
  505. line options, and are thus candidates for being included in
  506. $MANOPT it is expected that they will become obsolete. N.B.
  507. All spaces that should be interpreted as part of an option's ar‐
  508. gument must be escaped.
  509. MANWIDTH
  510. If $MANWIDTH is set, its value is used as the line length for
  511. which manual pages should be formatted. If it is not set, man‐
  512. ual pages will be formatted with a line length appropriate to
  513. the current terminal (using the value of $COLUMNS, and ioctl(2)
  514. if available, or falling back to 80 characters if neither is
  515. available). Cat pages will only be saved when the default for‐
  516. matting can be used, that is when the terminal line length is
  517. between 66 and 80 characters.
  518. MAN_KEEP_FORMATTING
  519. Normally, when output is not being directed to a terminal (such
  520. as to a file or a pipe), formatting characters are discarded to
  521. make it easier to read the result without special tools. How‐
  522. ever, if $MAN_KEEP_FORMATTING is set to any non-empty value,
  523. these formatting characters are retained. This may be useful
  524. for wrappers around man that can interpret formatting charac‐
  525. ters.
  526. MAN_KEEP_STDERR
  527. Normally, when output is being directed to a terminal (usually
  528. to a pager), any error output from the command used to produce
  529. formatted versions of manual pages is discarded to avoid inter‐
  530. fering with the pager's display. Programs such as groff often
  531. produce relatively minor error messages about typographical
  532. problems such as poor alignment, which are unsightly and gener‐
  533. ally confusing when displayed along with the manual page. How‐
  534. ever, some users want to see them anyway, so, if
  535. $MAN_KEEP_STDERR is set to any non-empty value, error output
  536. will be displayed as usual.
  537. LANG, LC_MESSAGES
  538. Depending on system and implementation, either or both of $LANG
  539. and $LC_MESSAGES will be interrogated for the current message
  540. locale. man will display its messages in that locale (if avail‐
  541. able). See setlocale(3) for precise details.
