Git is version control software. It can keep track of changes, allow you to commit changes and then come back to them, and to create experimental branches which you can either ignore, delete, or incorporate into your work. If you use a publicly available repository, others can fork your project, make their own changes, and then send you a pull request. If you like their changes, you can pull them into the project.
Pretty cool stuff.
